Licensed access is a system whereby suitable expert organisations or individuals can apply to the Bar Council to be licensed to instruct barristers directly on their own behalf or on behalf of clients. For further information please visit the Bar Standards Board website.

Direct Public Access
Anyone who wants to instruct a barrister is now able to do so directly – without an intermediary (ie without a solicitor or other licensed intermediary) – provided the barrister has the appropriate qualification and agrees to accept instructions on this basis. The rules which govern this arrangement are called the Public Access Rules and they, together with associated Guidance can be found on the Bar Council website.
