We’re Recruiting: Fees and Billing Clerk

Cornerstone Barristers is looking to bring their fees and billing collection in-house by recruiting a proactive and experienced billing and fees collection clerk. Legal Aid experience is required however Legal Aid billing will be a small part of the overall role.

The successful candidate will be joining a thriving and ambitious chambers with a friendly, supportive and professional clerks room and staff team.

We are also willing to discuss flexible and/or part-time working.

Purpose

To run efficient revenue control and fee collection for members. The role will include working closely with the clerking and finance teams to provide an effective, efficient and professional service for members and clients.

Key responsibilities

  • Proactively oversee the process for billing and payment, chasing outstanding bills, recording payments and allocating to correct invoices, liaising with the clerking team as required.
  • Legal aid billing; oversee the submission of Legal Aid claims on the CCMS
  • Support members and clerks with the submission of legal aid claims, associated assessments, appeals and repayments.
  • Deal with queries regarding bills, invoices and fee notes, including Legal Aid
  • Regular aged debt reporting and proactively addressing aged debt
  • Liaise with the senior clerk, senior practice managers and members in relation to the escalation of fee collection and enforcement.
  • Maintaining accurate records in the relevant systems, including time recording and billing databases
  • Ensure compliance with any relevant regulations and procedures relating to billing
  • Preparing reports for tax purposes
  • Work with the CEO and Senior Clerk to proactively keep billing and fee collection processes under review to ensure that they are fit for purpose
  • Management of projects as directed by the CEO and/or senior clerk
  • Assisting with ad hoc cover in the finance team during periods of absence
  • Daily BACs approvals

Skills and experience

  • Proactive, analytical and organised
  • Experience in fee chasing and debt collection within a professional services environment
  • Proficient in using Lex case management system and the LAA billing portal
  • Strong IT and numeracy skills
  • Clear and professional communication skills
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and work under pressure
  • Positive and collaborative attitude
