In this webinar, Philip Coppel KC and Alistair Cantor will present on the tort of deceit and Misrepresentation Act 1967, a solid working knowledge of which should be in all commercial litigators’ toolkits. The webinar will include discussion on:

  • Deceit, and ss1-2 of the Misrepresentation Act 1967;
  • Joint liability and tortfeasorship, including as between companies and statutory directors; and
  • Procedural best practice and beartraps to avoid.

Presenters:

Philip Coppel KC is a recognised leader in commercial litigation (including civil fraud, bank matters and tax disputes), all areas of government law and data protection/FOI/privacy law. He has extensive court and tribunal experience to the highest appellate levels. Recent major court appearances have been concerned with financial services, bank matters, civil fraud, freezing injunctions, local government law, judicial review, planning, environmental law, privacy and data protection, and freedom of information. 

Alistair Cantor specialises in commercial and regulatory, property and housing law. He undertakes a broad range of drafting, advisory and advocacy work for private litigants and public authorities. Alistair began his career at UBS Investment Bank, before being called to the Bar in 2011 and has since built a successful practice. He combines his legal acumen with sound commercial expertise when advising his clients. He holds long-standing instructions from the Dobbs Review, the ongoing high-profile independent review into the HBOS Reading fraud. He has a unique specialism in enforcement law, having regularly acted in enforcement proceedings concerning high value and foreign judgments.
