Cayman Islands Data Protection Law
For the next two weeks, Matt Lewin, a member of Cornerstone Barristers’ Information Law team, is providing training to civil servants of the Cayman Islands Government on the Cayman Data Protection and Freedom of Information Laws. Matt was also a member of the Cornerstone team which advised the Department for Culture Media and Sport on the drafting of the UK Data Protection Act 2018.
The Data Protection Law only came into force on 30 September 2019 and, for the first time in Cayman, establishes a set of rules and legal rights to protect the privacy of personal information. It is largely based on the UK Data Protection Act 1998, with some concepts derived from the GDPR bolted on.
The Freedom of Information Law has been in force since 2009.
Matt is providing training on behalf of PDP, the leading training provider in data protection and freedom of information. He regularly provides the FOI Levels 1 and 2 course in the UK.
