Cornerstone Barristers appointed to the Gambling Commission’s panel
Cornerstone Barristers has been appointed to the Gambling Commission’s standing panel of barristers’ chambers to provide legal advice and representation for an initial period of three years.
The team will be led by Head of Chambers Philip Kolvin QC, previous standing counsel to the Gambling Commission, Patron of the Institute of Licensing and former Chair of London’s Night Time Commission.
Philip, who has recently represented the Gambling Commission in the first gambling case in the Court of Appeal, said: “We are delighted about this prestigious appointment and we look forward to working for the Gambling Commission for the next three years. Our appointment is a testament to Cornerstone’s strength in public law work”.
In the last year, the Cornerstone licensing team has been instructed in all the highest-profile cases in licensing, including: the re-opening of the world-famous London club, Fabric; Uber’s legal challenge against Transport for London (TfL); and R (Hemming v Westminster City Council), the first licensing case to reach the Supreme Court and the European Court.
Philip and the team act for licensing authorities, national regulators, the police, industry operators, independents, trade associations and community groups across all fields of licensing, including gambling, taxi, sex and alcohol.
The Gambling Commission is the independent body regulating casinos, betting, bingo games, gaming machines and lotteries in Great Britain. It is also responsible for advising local and central government on issues related to gambling.
