Join solicitor and DPE alumnus Arjun Kiri (Political Economy, 2018), in conversation with barrister Dr Sam Fowles speaking about his legal work on politics and the truth.

Barrister Dr Sam Fowles has argued many of the most high profile British “political lying” cases of recent years, from Miller v Prime Minister (2019) – in which Boris Johnson was found to have “lied to the Queen” – to successfully defending the Scottish National Party’s John Nicolson before Parliament’s Privileges Committee when Nicolson was accused of breaching parliamentary privilege by informing the public of a ruling given by the Speaker of the House of Commons. In his talk at King’s, he will set out why political lying should be seen as an existential threat to a functioning democracy and will propose a radical solution whereby citizens can, through the courts, demand that politicians correct the record when they are caught lying.

After the talk, there will be plenty of opportunity for questions, about talk itself and/or about Sam’s and Arjun’s career trajectory, and careers in law more generally.

*** This event is organised by the Student Engagement Team in collaboration with the King’s Centre for British Democracy ***
