New Leadership for Cornerstone Barristers Planning and Environment Team

Cornerstone Barristers is pleased to announce the appointment of Josef Cannon KC and Robert Williams as the new Joint Heads of the Planning and Environment Team.

They take over from Michael Bedford KC, who is stepping down after many years of distinguished service. Under Michael’s leadership, Cornerstone’s planning team has seen real recognition: three new silks in as many years; appearances in many high-profile cases and inquiries; multiple appointments to Government panels; and repeated success in industry awards.

Joe and Rob are committed to building on the team’s outstanding reputation in planning, environment and infrastructure. They look forward to working closely with Cornerstone Climate, the centre of excellence for climate litigation, with an emphasis including solar, wind, water, battery storage and other renewable projects.

Michael will remain an active and integral part of the team, continuing to practise and support colleagues with his characteristic dedication and insight.

Recent highlights include: R (Finch) v Surrey CC, the first climate-based challenge to a commercial oil production permission heard by the Supreme Court; the Lower Thames Crossing and Gatwick Northern Runway DCO examinations; litigation concerning nationally important developments such as the Redevelopment of the ITV Building on the Southbank; and national planning policy, including Ross v Secretary of State (EN- 3), advising Historic England on the City of London Plan, with an emphasis on safeguarding and enhancing the capital’s historic environment; as well as nationally significant projects including the London Gateway LDO and Sizewell C.
