Senedd moves closer to making it a criminal offence for politicians to lie

Public Law and Judicial Review

Matt Hutchings KC, Josef Cannon KC and Sam Fowles have all been involved advising on the legality of proposals from former Plaid Cymru leader, Adam Price, that politicians be disqualified from the Senedd for deliberate political lying.

  • Sam Fowles appeared before the Senedd’s standards committee on 24th June 2024 to give evidence on the proposals.  He advised that they were clearly drafted and drew on long-established legal principles.  He would therefore be confident of defending them in a judicial review.  You can read more about the debate here.  The Senedd will vote on the proposal on 2nd July 2024.
  • Matt Hutchings KC, Josef Cannon KC and Sam Fowles also addressed a cross-party meeting of Senedd members on 27th June 2024.
  • Sam Fowles will be speaking on a panel in the Senedd on 2nd July 2024 alongside the journalist, Peter Oborne, and Jennifer Nadel, a director of Compassion in Politics.

Cornerstone are a leading chambers for public law and judicial review and you can join us on 4th July 2024 for our conference: “Public Law in 2024 – practical insights and trends” at which the keynote speaker is Lady Arden, former justice of the UK Supreme Court.  Find out more and purchase tickets here.
