Three-week inquiry opens into mixed-use scheme opposite Hampton Court Palace
14 Jun 2022
Today beings a planning inquiry concerning a proposal for five buildings over the River Thames from Hampton Court Palace.
The three and four-storey buildings would comprise: 97 flats, an 84-bedroom hotel and retail units, on land around Hampton Court Station.
Planning permission was refused on heritage and townscape grounds. The Inspector will hear evidence from eight expert witnesses over three weeks.
Development of the site has been controversial in the past, sparking the well known appeals in R(Garner) v Elmbridge Borough Council [2010] EWCA Civ 1006 and [2011] EWCA Civ 891.
Dr Ashley Bowes represents the local planning authority which refused permission and appears at the inquiry to defend its decision.
