On 31 October 2016 the Secretary of State for Transport confirmed Side Roads and Compulsory Purchase Orders made by Suffolk County Council in relation to the £7m Beccles Southern Relief Road. The Relief Road is a 2.2km single carriageway road connecting the A145 south of Beccles with the Ellough Industrial Estate, which forms part of the Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth Enterprise Zone. The Relief Road is intended to facilitate further development of the Enterprise Zone, helping to unlock some £106m of GVA benefits, whilst providing traffic and environmental relief to the historic market town of Beccles.

The Relief Road was promoted by Suffolk County Council and is supported by the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership. After a public inquiry in August 2016 the Inspector recommended that the Orders be confirmed and the Secretary of State has agreed.

Michael Bedford QC acted for Suffolk County Council.
