Public Law and Judicial Review

Overruled: Our Vanishing Democracy in 8 Cases examines, through eight of his cases, the impact of the last decade of political turmoil on our legal system and on our daily lives. Local communities lack the means to fight off predatory developers. The Post Office pursues criminal convictions against its own employees on dodgy evidence. And a vigil for a murdered woman turns into a spectacle of police violence.

Dr Sam Fowles specialises in public and constitutional law, and is due to begin a position as a lecturer in public law at St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford.

He says: “We often think of the constitution as the concern of stuffy lawyers or pompous politicians. Actually, it speaks directly to who we are: Are we empowered citizens with control over our own lives or cringing subjects waiting for our betters to tell us what to do?”

Cecilia Stein, Editorial Director of Oneworld said: “Given the sorry state of our politics, Overruled couldn’t be more urgent. Sam skillfully unveils the threats to our rights, and what we can do to better preserve them.”

Overruled is now available for pre-order from Amazon, Waterstones and Blackwells.
