31 Oct 2022

Cornerstone Barristers is proud to sponsor the event: ‘Does the UK’s human rights regime need reform?’, hosted by leading think tank the Institute for Government (IfG) on Wednesday 16th November 2022, 6-7pm.

Estelle Dehon KC will join the panel along with Rt Hon Baroness Chakrabarti CBE, former Shadow Attorney General, Rajiv Shah, a former Number 10 Special Adviser and Professor Colm O’Cinneide, Professor of Human Rights Law at UCL.

As the dust settles on the recent changes in Government, and with the return of Dominic Raab as Secretary of State for Justice, the panel will reignite the debate surrounding the protection of people’s rights and liberties. It will discuss the following questions:

  • Does the government need to reform how people’s rights are protected in the UK?
  • Should any reforms consider “new” rights, like the right to a clean and healthy environment?
  • What questions have been raised about the right to protest after the focus on how the public could show dissent during King Charles III’s accession?
  • What role should international institutions play in upholding human rights?

This event follows on from the many themes discussed in our Public Law team’s previous webinar: ‘Getting to grips with the Bill of Rights Bill’, keeping up with the many twists and turns since the Bill was withdrawn last month.
