Estelle Dehon KC to argue in favour of retrofitting buildings at Futurebuild Conference
Cornerstone’s Estelle Dehon KC will make the case for retrofitting buildings, over rebuilding them, when she speaks at a debate at the Futurebuild Conference tomorrow.
Within the building industry, the preferred option is to clear the site and start again, but carbon calculations too often advise that this is inappropriate. An alternative has been to retain the facade leaving it looking out of place. Adaptive reuse of, and where appropriate extensions to, existing buildings can be more challenging, but more rewarding.
The debate will look at the issues from both sides with Estelle speaking in support of a motion that calls for a presumption of retrofit for whole-life carbon and cultural reasons.
Estelle will be joined by Peter Fisher, Director of Bennetts Associates, in supporting the motion with Matt Richards, a director at Savills, and Jo Bacon, a partner at Allies and Morrison, opposing the motion.
The debate will take place from 15.30 – 16:30 on 7 March 2023 at the Futurebuild Conference 2023 at the ExCel arena, London.
