A core specialism of Cornerstone Barristers is acting for and against the public sector, and particularly local and national government. We act for more than 300 local authorities across England and Wales, as well as central government and other public sector bodies.

Our work spans the full range of government, constitutional and public law concerns, including strategic issues, vires, finance, and councillors' conduct. Members also act for local authorities, government departments and private organisations in relation to rating and valuation issues.

We now have 11 barristers on the Attorney General's Panel of Counsel (Panel 'B' and 'C') acting for central government in a variety of matters: Catherine Rowlands, Ryan Kohli, Clare Parry, Estelle Dehon, Robert Williams, Emma Dring, Jack Parker, Richard Hanstock, Dr Ashley Bowes, Riccardo Calzavara and Matt Lewin.

The team is a leading authority on local government law and recently published "Cornerstone on Councillors' Conduct", the definitive guide to the standards that govern the conduct of those elected to local government in England and Wales.

A number of our barristers have worked in local government departments prior to joining the bar, giving us an in depth understanding of the needs and challenges facing local and central government. We understand the constraints within which the public sector works, and take a practical and pragmatic approach to our work.
