Planning and Environment

Today sees the closure on time of the 6 month long Sizewell C DCO Examination. The Examination has been considering SZC Co’s proposals to build two new EPR nuclear reactors at Sizewell in the AONB on the Suffolk Heritage Coast.

The proposals are put forward as a major contribution to the UK’s plans to become carbon neutral by 2050 and are the only current nuclear proposal that is currently before the Secretary of State. If approved the proposals will be one of the largest construction projects in the UK (and in Europe) and will take some 9 to 12 years to build.

The Examining Authority has 3 months to prepare and submit its report and the Secretary of State has 3 months to make a decision. A decision is therefore expected by Easter 2022.

Michael Bedford QC, instructed by Sharpe Pritchard, acted for Suffolk County Council, a host authority, throughout the Examination
